March 5, 2019The caravan of Žikina šarenica was staying on Jahorina where two episodes were made, which can be seen in the continuation of this text and before that you can read Zika’s impressions from Jahorina, the Olympic mountain.
“This weekend I was on Jahorina. With colleagues from TV Pink we recorded two shows of “Žikina šarenica” and this was an opportunity for new knowledge about this magical area.
The International Olympic Committee gave Sarajevo the role of the organizer of the XIV Winter Olympic Games, which took place in 1984. In addition to Sarajevo, a large part of the competition activities took place on the surrounding mountains. Sarajevo became the center of media interest, and Jahorina, one of the mountains in which the Winter Olympics took place, is experiencing the greatest bloom. Jahorina boasts with excellent infrastructure, as well as access roads and proximity to the airport, Sarajevo and Pale. It is also the most modern and largest ski center in BiH. The highest peak of Jahorina is Ogorjelica with 1,916 m above sea level.
The total length of the alpine skiing trails is about 40 kilometers. The Jahorina trails are located between 1.880 and 1.300 meters above sea level, which represents a quite solid 580 m altitude difference. Apart from the exceptional configuration of the ski trails, the mountain also has an impressive vertical transport. The center functions with three new six-seaters, four ski-lifts and two-seater, with a total capacity of 10,000 skiers per hour, which contributes to the quick and pleasant transfer of the skiers.
In addition to its technical characteristics, this mountain has an incredible spirit. The atmosphere and the pleasantness of the local population are something to which top ski centers can be envious of the “Olympic beauty”.
At the closing ceremony in 1984, the president of the IOC, Juan Antonio Samaran, said that Sarajevo was the best organizer of the Winter Olympic Games until then in their history, and the last words were: “Goodbye, dear Sarajevo”. However, the Olympic spirit still lives in this city on the mountain of Jahorina and its inhabitants, despite the generational shifts and life problems that have hit this region in recent decades. This is also felt by the guests who come to Jahorina, which has made it one of the favorite destinations in the region, and even beyond. These March days it is hard to find a free place in hotels, which, according to the director of the Jahorina Olympic Center Dejan Ljevaic, are sweet pains and the obligation to extend the offer. The renovation and expansion of the cult hotel “Bistrica” has already commenced.
Until the next week, your Žika Šarenica
